Bradford on Avon straddles the river and derives its name from “broad ford”. The textile industry was thriving here for more than six centuries until a change in location for the dyeing of textiles meant the end of many mills in the West Country. However, Paul Methuen brought a colony of Flemish weavers to the area in order to introduce new and innovative techniques thus reviving the industries. The quaint town of nearby Corsham is worth a visit. Today, this picturesque market town is popular with visitors who come to enjoy the honey coloured architecture and interesting shops. The Tithe Barn is a grand example of a 14th century building and was originally used to store local peasants’ taxes or “tithes”.
